In-mould coating (IMC)
The HP-IMC system enables a tool-integrated coating process directly within the mold cavity or negative mold. This solvent-based 2K PU coating is UV-resistant, scratch-resistant, and suitable for CFRP, GFRP, and molded plastic components. When combined with the IMC thinner and the HP-HGR5 high-gloss release agent, it produces a uniform, durable surface – without the need for post-painting.
2K In-Mould Coating – Tool-integrated coating for perfect surfaces
How does the HP-IMC In-Mould coating work?
HP-IMC is a two-component, solvent-based PU coating system applied directly to the mold surface. It is sprayed on before the lamination process and bonds seamlessly to the composite part during curing, forming a high-quality, UV-stable finish. The system is suitable for CFRP and GFRP parts as well as components made from epoxy or polyurethane resins. Its key advantage: no post-painting required, which reduces time, material usage, and reworking. Application is done by spray gun at temperatures above 18 °C. The coating cures chemically, remains temperature-resistant up to 80 °C, and withstands UV exposure, fuels, moisture, and mechanical stress.
What components are used and what should be considered during processing?
For optimal results, HP-IMC is combined with the dedicated IMC thinner HP-IMC-X, which adjusts the viscosity and promotes a uniform film layer on the mold surface. Precise mixing is crucial – the recommended ratio is provided in the technical data sheet. To ensure clean demolding and a defect-free surface finish, the high-gloss release agent HP-HGR5 is applied. This silicone-free release agent forms a smooth, heat-resistant barrier between mold and coating. Together, HP-IMC, thinner, and release agent form a coordinated system for in-mould surface finishing in CFRP and GFRP production.
What are typical applications for in-mould coatings?
The 2K In-Mould Coating is ideal for visible composite surfaces that require uniform coloration, scratch resistance, and UV durability – such as in motorsport, marine and yacht construction, industrial design, or technical enclosures. The coating reduces post-processing and polishing while improving impact resistance and weather resistance. Thanks to its direct in-mold application, a high-end finish is achieved in a single step – ideal for series production, small batch manufacturing, or functional prototyping. HP-IMC is the ideal solution when technical performance and optical quality must go hand in hand.
