Why is vacuum technology essential in composite processing?

Vacuum infusion is an established method in composite manufacturing that ensures uniform resin distribution and optimal fiber wet-out through controlled vacuum pressure. This results in void-free, mechanically strong laminate structures with a high fiber volume content. Key elements such as vacuum film, perforated release film, peel ply, flow media, polyester breather fabric, and the MTI hose system enable precise process control—even with complex part geometries. The process is widely used in boat building, lightweight construction, motorsports, wind energy, and aerospace because it significantly optimizes material usage and production time.

Which components are part of a vacuum infusion setup?

An effective vacuum infusion process with epoxy resin requires multiple components: The vacuum film serves as the outer barrier layer, protecting the laminate from environmental influences. Beneath it, the perforated release film acts as a separation layer, allowing excess resin to pass through. Polyester breather fabric (150 g/m²) ensures even resin distribution and aids in air evacuation. The flow media (green flow mesh) regulates resin flow across the surface. Striped red peel ply allows for a clean layer build-up and a reworkable laminate surface. The MTI (Multi Transfusion Injection) hose system precisely controls resin flow, avoiding resin pooling and reducing consumption. Butyl vacuum sealant tape (12×3 mm) ensures proper sealing of the vacuum film. Additional equipment includes oil-lubricated vacuum pumps, vacuum fittings, spray adhesives, and the digital Vac Checker for leak testing.

> Infusion resin systems
Infusion resins are specially formulated systems optimized for vacuum infusion thanks to their low viscosity. Typically epoxy-based, they enable even fiber impregnation, high dimensional accuracy, and void-free laminates with excellent mechanical properties. These systems are used with breather fabric, flow media, MTI hose, and other components—particularly in lightweight construction, boatbuilding, prototyping, and for complex CFRP/GFRP parts.

> Perforated release film
Perforated films act as a separation layer between the laminate and breather fabric, allowing defined resin flow. Made from heat-resistant PE or FEP, they prevent bonding between the absorption layer and the part. The size and pattern of the perforations influence both resin flow and air evacuation. These films are used in nearly all infusion setups, especially for large-area CFRP or GFRP components.

> Polyester breather fabric
This fabric absorbs excess resin and is placed between the perforated film and flow media. It offers high absorbency, good conformability, and helps ensure even resin distribution. The 150 g/m² variant is particularly common and proven in epoxy infusion. It is used in automotive, marine, sports equipment, and model-building applications.

> Flow media / Vent mesh
Flow media—typically green net structures—enhance resin flow across the laminate surface. They enable thorough impregnation, even in complex geometries, and ensure full air evacuation. Combined with breather fabric and MTI hose, they are vital to efficient vacuum infusion processes. Commonly used with epoxy resin in tank construction, marine, sports, and aerospace applications.

> Vacuum film
The vacuum film encloses the laminate stack and enables stable vacuum pressure. Available in 50 µm thickness, often made of high-temperature-resistant PE or PA, it offers excellent stretchability and tear resistance. It’s versatile—used from hand laminates to large-scale vacuum infusion of CFRP/GFRP parts.

> Vacuum sealant tape
Made mostly from butyl rubber, these tapes seal the vacuum film to the mold reliably, even at higher temperatures. They’re easy to apply, cleanly removable, and come in standard dimensions like 12 mm wide × 3 mm thick. Sealant tapes are essential to all infusion processes, regardless of resin or part geometry.

> MTI hose
The MTI (Membrane Tube Infusion) hose is an innovative system for targeted resin flow control. It consists of a permeable membrane tube that blocks excess resin while still evacuating air, ensuring a consistent, optimized fill. Widely used in high-quality applications such as aerospace, yacht building, and prototype manufacturing.

> Fiberglass mesh tape
Fiberglass mesh tape sed as an edge closure in the vacuum stack, this mesh tape improves sealing, prevents resin pooling, and ensures clean laminate edges. It’s pressure-resistant, resin-compatible, and easy to position. Common in small series production, mold making, and part finishing.

> Peel ply
Peel ply is a technical fabric removed after curing to leave a textured, bondable surface, ideal for secondary bonding or coating. Common types—like red-striped polyester peel ply—are resin-permeable, heat-resistant, and tear-resistant. Used in almost all epoxy-based lamination techniques.

> Vacuum accessories
Vacuum accessoires include hoses, vacuum fittings, resin traps, T-connectors, and adapters—essential for flexible integration of all components. These accessories ensure safe setups, simplify plumbing, and enhance process reliability—crucial for industrial use and complex laminate builds.

> Vacuum pumps & Vac checker
Vacuum pumps are the core of the infusion system, creating the necessary pressure differential. Available as oil-free, oil-lubricated, or with vacuum tanks, selection depends on part size, resin viscosity, and cycle time. The Vac Checker, a digital leak detector, helps verify system integrity beforehand. Together, they ensure safe and efficient operations.

> Spray adhesive
Spray adhesives are used to tack fabrics, flow media, or films in place prior to infusion. They are solvent-free, heat-resistant, and leave no residue. This prevents material shifting and simplifies the setup of complex layups. Used in nearly all vacuum film-based infusion techniques.

What are the advantages of modern vacuum technology in resin infusion?

Modern vacuum infusion consumables enable the production of high-quality, dimensionally accurate components with low weight and excellent surface finish. The reliable infusion process improves repeatability, reduces defects, and minimizes waste. At the same time, it allows for higher fiber content, significantly enhancing the laminate’s mechanical properties. Components such as the MTI hose, perforated release film, high-temp-resistant 50 µm vacuum film, polyester breather fabric, and peel ply are well-coordinated to ensure clean laminate edges, efficient resin flow, and time-optimized production.
A wide selection of vacuum technology accessories—tailored to different resin systems, part sizes, and temperature ranges—supports industrial processing while offering high flexibility for prototyping, model making, and series production.
